Choosing a Webhost

By Themes Tests   Posted at  10:32   Web Hosting No comments

Your web host holds the key to a consistent web presence – but do you want the basics or something more advanced?

When choosing a web hosting company that’s right for your individual needs, you need to make sure that you’re getting the best deal possible.

While it’s tempting to judge a company on its web space price alone, there may be hidden costs that you need to consider too. However, don’t forget that companies with comparatively high prices may include a number of extras, such as free 24-hour telephone support and unlimited POP3 email addresses. A good standard of technical support is a vital need for business sites, so it may be worth testing the host’s helplines or email support before making your choice. It’s a big decision, so be sure to weigh up all the options of what’s right for your company before you commit yourself.

Here’s some advice on what to consider before choosing your Web host. It’s all about deciding what level of service you’re going to need – now and in the future. These will be your main decision factors:

Platform – which OS will give you the right stability?

You will have a basic choice of Windows or Linux. You will need to consider which will offer you the best uptime and stability for your site.

Design – can they support your design format and shopping cart?

Saying your site is designed in HTML is not going to cut it. Does the site use ASP, PHP, XML, CSS or another type of script?

Size – do you need 500 MBs or unlimited, does it include database space?

Picking the right size will be crucial to the future of your site; more space puts the price up but not enough will mean an upgrade sooner than you think.

Databases – do they allow databases, and which ones?

Can the web host support the database your Website or shopping cart needs? Can it be made secure if you are going to keep customer details? Will it be fast enough so it won’t slow your site down?

SSL – secure certificates or secure space, what is available

To ensure your customers trust the site to place that all-important order, you need secure space access.

Does your web host provide shared secure space or do you need to buy your own certificate? Are you using it wisely? Remember that too much use will slow your site.

Partners – who is going to get your money for you?

Can the web host support a financial transaction partner? Do you have to use a merchant account? What are the costs and requirements either way?

The future – can you grow?

You may start with a small site, but what happens if it booms? Have you got the ability to grow? Just how scalable is your chosen host?

Draw up a short list of possible suppliers. Look at their sites; email them – not forgetting to check how long it takes them to reply (don’t count auto-replies). All of this will help to build an understanding of the different hosting companies you are interested in.

Once you have the information you need to look at each one objectively. Call them; ask questions, lots of question if you need to. The person at the other end should be able to answer those questions, or at least transfer you to someone that can.

Taking these seven main points into careful consideration will help you choose the right package.

Microsoft erects a 383-inch Surface tablet in the center of London

By Themes Tests   Posted at  03:43   Technology No comments

(THE VERGE-24 Oct) Microsoft has created a fascinating 383-inch Surface tablet at one of London’s biggest tourist attractions, Trafalgar Square. Sitting right next to Nelson’s Column, the giant Surface dwarfs all the other historic statues at Trafalgar Square. Microsoft built the it's 27-foot wide and 17-foot high structure in around 12 hours, and making it roughly a 383-inch display.

A purple Type Cover 2 has been recreated, with keys that feedback to a Surface 2 nearby. Microsoft is letting nearby school kids play on the keyboard with a spelling game. It’s all connected via USB and micro HDMI and you can jump on the keys to control the input. The company has even built space around the keys so you can walk around them before you select the correct key to jump on.

It’s all a publicity stunt in the center of London, designed to market Microsoft’s recently released Surface 2. Thousands of tourists and workers pass through Trafalgar Square each day, so Microsoft has clearly picked an ideal location for its giant Surface tablet. It might not be a giant Windows Phone or a giant Surface cake, but it’s just as impressive.

China Achieves Internet Access via Lightbulbs

By Themes Tests   Posted at  02:35   Technology No comments

Chinese scientists have successfully developed a new cheaper way of getting connected to internet by using signals sent through light bulbs instead of radio frequencies as in 'Wi-Fi', a move expected to radically change process of online connectivity. The design and construction of light source enable efficiency, long stable life, full spectrum intensity that is digitally controlled and easy to use.

According to Ms Chi Nan, an information technology professor in Shanghai's Fudan University, who leads a Li-Fi research team including scientists from the Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
“Four computers can be connected to internet through one- watt LED bulb using light as a carrier instead of traditional radio frequencies, as in Wi-Fi.”
Current wireless signal transmission equipment is expensive and low in efficiency, noted Chi in the article. "As for cell phones, millions of base stations have been established around the world to strengthen the signal but most of the energy is consumed on their cooling systems," she explained, but noted the energy utilization rate was only 5 percent."

She explained a lightbulb with embedded microchips can produce data rates as fast as 150 Mbps, much higher than the average broadband connection in China.

The term Li-Fi was coined as early as 2011 by Harald Haas, a professor of engineering at Edinburgh University, with the name standing for Light-Fidelity. The technology made use of LED bulbs that glow and darken faster than the human eye can see, and LED lights being semiconductors could be programmable. Haas had suggested that the applications and capacity for data would be limitless, ranging from using car headlights to transmit data, or employing line of sight light sources as data transmitters.

iPad 5 Rumors Round-up

By Themes Tests   Posted at  00:48   Technology No comments

The iPad 5 is Apple's next generation 9.7-inch tablet that will feature an iPad mini-style design with a smaller size, thinner side bezels, and an improved processor.

Apple is expected to announce its new thinner iPad 5 and an iPad Mini with Retina display this week. The claims come in a report from Ming-Chi Kuo, a Thai analyst for a Bangkok based investment firm KGI Securities. He has a strong track record in predicting Apple's product plans.

According to the report, the new iPad 5 will be 20% thinner with the measurements as 169.5 x 239.2 x 7.2mm shown in the leaked video by the Chinese parts supplier sw-box.com. iPad 5 is more lighter than the current model, and will have the same narrow bezel design as the iPad Mini. But the new tablets probably won't have the fingerprint scanning Touch ID feature developed for the iPhone 5S as there is no tangible evidence to suggest Touch ID will be appearing on the iPad. Kuo does expect the new M7 motion tracking chip to make the jump from phone to tablet.
Kuo was the first to anticipated the gold iPhone 5s, the Touch ID fingerprint scanner, and the removal of the iPhone 5 from the product line-up, all of which he called long before their official announcement.

Kuo claims the new iPad will include an 8-megapixel rear camera. It’s a vast improvement on the current iPad 4's 5-megapixel offering. The new image sensor is said to be 15 per cent larger and can let in 33 per cent more light.

The new iPad Mini 2 is expected to have a Retina display, boasting a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, which will put it ahead of its competitors, Google's Nexus 7 II and Amazon's Kindle Fire HD.

Rumours have suggested that Apple is looking to ditch the two LED backlighting bars found in the previous iPad models and replace it with one to decrease the device’s overall weight. This removal of one of the LED tubes would also improve battery life.

Chinese social site Weibo leaked an image of the rear casing for the iPad 5. The image reveals Apple has done away with the angular edges of the iPad 4 in favour of a more curved design like the mini, along with adding the mini-style speakers either side of the Lightning port.

A sketchy rumor has suggested Apple could be considering adding both a sapphire home button and a Touch ID fingerprint sensor to the iPad 5, and a recent video discovered that the iPad 5 will include a smaller home button that could potentially support the hardware. It remains unclear, however, whether Apple plans to expand its Touch ID fingerprint sensor to its iPad lineup at this point in time.

Apple is hosting a media event on October 22 that will focus on the fifth-generation iPad and the new iPad mini. The event will take place at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco, with satellite events in both London and Japan.
